Why is it bad to use chemicals when cleaning a rug?

Chemicals react negatively with dyes and natural properties of the wool, such as lanoline, weakening the natural fiber over time. It changes the appearance and shortens the life and usability of the rug forever. Chemicals adhere to fibers, requiring extra rinsing for 100% removal, which may be impossible (usually is) to do because once they have adhered completely they stay forever. Solvents used in chemicals leave a residue on the rug that, although difficult to feel sometimes, is extremely dangerous to breath or come in contact with. They can be released on your children and pets, who crawl and play on the rugs not knowing that they are being directly exposed to chemicals.
