Vacuum cleaners are too strong for the purpose of picking up surface dirt, dust or hair. Be especially cautious when using vacuums with power brushes or beaters; they can break down foundation in antique rugs, kilims or flat weaves if used too vigorously. Also avoid using these vacuums over fringes. The brushes shred the fringes and cause rapid wear or, as it happens often, fringes get caught and chewed up by the brush.
It is important for the longevity of your rug to clean it regularly. However, instead of using a vacuum, get a Hokey, Bissell or other type of hand push sweeper and clean out after every use.
