Floor discoloration is normally caused by a reaction of the floor material to the air, sunlight or an incorrect pad under your rug. Many types of wood floors are photosensitive; this means that they will react under excessive UV exposure by becoming lighter or darker. Wood floors can also react with the free air by capturing moisture that then leaves a stain on the surface as it tries to get out; this process is called oxidation.
Another cause for discoloration is the type of pads that you use. Flat or dimple rubber pads may consist of 50% or more clay, which will fry and crack with age, heat and dry conditions or on heated floors. When this kind of pad dries out it releases its color onto the floor creating a stain. Using no pad is not a solution either. Plasticizers used in the latex coating on the back of some rugs can also dry out and stain floors.
